Heirloom Tomato and Bleu Cheese Salad

I wait all year for these indescribably delicious heirloom tomatoes. Yes, in this era of perpetual availability of all fruits and vegetables, there still is a special unique flavor to produce in its natural season. Tomatoes fall into this category. To me, there is nothing more delicious and satisfying than a perfectly ripe tomato. My Mother used to eat tomatoes like people eat apples. In fact, tomatoes are a fruit!

Whether you buy perfect plum tomatoes, tomatoes on the vine, kumatos, cherry tomatoes, Jersey or heirloom tomatoes, your salad will be elevated. My favorites are the Jersey and heirloom tomatoes. They are so flavorful that very little needs to be done to make them shine. In this salad, I just add a little bleu cheese, olive oil, and sea salt and voila- magic happens.

Heirloom Tomatoes and Bleu Cheese Salad

  • 1-2 Servings


  • 3 medium heirloom tomatoes a mix of colors is pretty
  • 1/3 cup bleu cheese cut into small chunks
  • 1 teaspoon coarse sea salt
  • extra virgin olive oil


  • 1 serrated knife


  1. Slice tomatoes about 1/4 inch thick. Arrange slices in an overlapping pattern on the plate. Alternate colors if you have bought different color tomatoes. Sprinkle sea salt and bleu cheese over the tomatoes. Drizzle olive oil over the top. Serve at room temperature with crusty bread. There is no better lunch or appetizer to be had!
